Zonde van de tijd - leren in Nederland vanuit economisch perspectief

Menselijk kapitaal wordt in de economie gezien als een belangrijke input in het productieproces, maar economen zijn nauwelijks betrokken bij discussies over hoe het onderwijs zou moeten worden ingericht.
Dit artikel laat zien dat het economisch perspectief een essentiele rol kan spelen bij keuzes over de inrichting van het onderwijs. Voor verschillende fasen in de levensloop wordt ingegaan op de economische afwegingen die spelen. De factor tijd is hierbij cruciaal. De auteur gaat in het bijzonder in op de volgende vragen:
(i) wanneer moeten kinderen beginnen met leren lezen en schrijven?;
(ii) wat is de optimale tijdsbesteding op de basisschool?;
(iii) hoe verstrekkend is de studiekeuze van middelbare scholieren?;
(iv) wat zijn de effecten van leren in groepen voor de inzet van
studenten?; en
(v) wat is het nut van levenslang leren?
